A radical new method of easy and safe storageComputers have evolved through the generations; from the very first analog machines designed by Charles Babbage to literal giants such as ENIAC and UNIVAC that took massive rooms, all the way to something so small that it fits at the palm of a human hand. File storage has also been radically revolutionized from magnetic tapes to floppy disks, and to USB drives capable of holding terabytes of data and information. However, the next generation of file storage has taken the global village by storm in the form of cloud computing.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) usually involves a third party that handles all the hardware, software, servers, storage, and other components on behalf of its users. IaaS providers also host user’s applications, and also perform certain tasks such as backup and resiliency planning. These resources are adjustable on demand, and are therefore much more suited for experimental or temporary workloads.
The second category, Platform as a service (PaaS) involves the hosting of development tools on their infrastructures. Users can gain access to these tools over the internet using Application Program Interfaces, or APIs, web portals or gateway software. PaaS is generally used for software development, and the providers of this service usually will host the software after its development. Notable PaaS providers include the Google App Engine and the Amazon Elastic Beanstalk.
The third and final category of cloud computing is known as Software as a Service (SaaS), which is a distribution model that delivers software applications via the internet. These are also known as “Web Services”. Users can access SaaS applications and services from any location using a computer or mobile device with internet access. Notable examples include Microsoft Office 365 offering for productivity software and email services.
How is it better than the conventional methods of file storage?Cloud computing emphasizes the maximization of effectiveness of the shared resources. That way, you could share all your enterprise information with your coworkers without the usual hustle. Its reliability on the sharing of resources in order to achieve coherence and economies of scale is one of the multitudes of traits to be admired. The elasticity that this method of storage emphasizes mean that most companies can grow up as computing needs continue to increase and scale down again as demands increase. Also, the users do not have to worry about various fees, such as capital expenses that are usually a part of traditional methods. Enterprises are only required to pay for the services they obtain, and it usually results in minimal start-up costs, which would be greatly beneficial for new up and coming businesses.
A rapidly emerging marketIn a recent report, Intel, the largest semiconductor maker in the world, has stated that the increase in their quarterly income is due to the shift towards cloud computing. The executives at Intel has stated that this shift is a “reflection of the broader changes in the computing industry” Microsoft and many other large companies that manufacture PCs report low sales due to the shift towards a rapidly growing online market, and are in the process of adjusting their products so as to keep up with the new, highly competitive online arena.
The recent merger of tech giants Dell and EMC have also been due to the rapidly changing nature of technology. Dell and EMC, who were pioneers in the field of networking and mainframe computers in the 1990s, are now scrambling in order to keep up the pace with the rapidly growing online market. Therefore, as technology continues to evolve at a fast rate, the enterprises of yesterday are also striving to become the enterprises of tomorrow, and face the challenges of the future.
